What Is Strong Over 40 — Bone-Smart?
Strong Over 40 — Bone-Smart takes the LIFTMOR bone-density research and trains it the way the study actually ran it: heavy resistance on the three big lifts, paired with deliberate impact. Squat, Deadlift, and Overhead Press build up to heavy working fives across the block — not the moderate 5x5 loading of a beginner program, but weights that push you into genuinely heavy territory by the time you’re weeks into the program. Alongside the barbell work, deliberate drop-landings load bone fast and hard, in short, controlled doses.
This program is built for masters lifters and postmenopausal women especially — the population the underlying research targeted and where bone-density decline is most consequential — but anyone with a good strength base and a serious interest in bone health belongs here.
Train heavy and recover smart. SteelRep lengthens your rests and slows your weight jumps as you age, so the program stays heavy without burying you between sessions.
Who Is This Program For?
Experience level: Intermediate. You should already own solid technique on the squat, deadlift, and overhead press before pushing them toward heavy working fives — this isn’t the place to learn the movements.
Goals: Bone density and strength together, trained the way the research paired them. Masters lifters and postmenopausal women get the most direct benefit, but the program works for any intermediate lifter chasing both outcomes.
Time commitment: Two full-body sessions per week. Heavier loading and impact work mean full recovery between sessions matters even more than in a standard strength program.
If you have established osteoporosis or a prior spinal fracture, get medical clearance before starting.
Program Schedule
Two full-body sessions per week, each built around the same three lifts working toward heavy fives, plus impact loading:
| Day | Session |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | Back Squat (heavy 5s), Deadlift (heavy 5s), Overhead Press (heavy 5s), Drop-Landings |
| Day 2 | Back Squat (heavy 5s), Deadlift (heavy 5s), Overhead Press (heavy 5s), Drop-Landings |
Both sessions train the same three lifts, working toward heavy sets of five rather than moderate-load volume. Drop-landings close each session as the deliberate impact component.
How Progression Works
The three lifts progress toward heavier working fives over the course of the block — not a flat weekly weight jump, but a build toward genuinely heavy sets as your base strength and recovery allow. SteelRep slows your weight jumps and extends your rests automatically as you age, keeping the loading heavy without adding injury risk.
Strict neutral spine throughout every lift — never round your back under load. That discipline matters more here than in a lighter program, because the working weights are heavier.
Drop-landings are dosed for impact, not volume. They stay low-rep and deliberate — the goal is a hard, brief loading signal to bone, not fatigue.
When you stall: The app deloads when you can’t complete your working fives cleanly, then rebuilds from there. Given the heavier target loading, expect this program to demand more patience and recovery discipline than a standard beginner 5x5.
Key Exercises
Back Squat — Built up to heavy working fives, the primary lower-body loading driver in the program.
Deadlift — Trained to heavy fives with a strict neutral spine. The single biggest posterior-chain and spinal-loading lift in the program.
Overhead Press — Heavy standing press work rounding out the three-lift core.
Drop-Landings — Deliberate, controlled landings from a height that load bone fast and hard. This is the direct impact component the underlying research paired with heavy resistance training.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is this different from Strong Over 40? Strong Over 40 uses standard 5x5 progression with box jumps as an add-on. This program pushes the same three lifts to heavier working fives and swaps box jumps for deliberate drop-landings — a more advanced, more explicitly bone-density-focused version of the same idea. If you’re newer to structured training, start with Strong Over 40 first.
Why drop-landings instead of box jumps? Drop-landings load bone on the landing, not the jump — a different, and in the underlying research, more targeted impact stimulus. They’re deliberate and controlled rather than explosive, which fits a program built around heavier resistance work and older or postmenopausal lifters.
I’m not postmenopausal or a “masters” lifter — can I still use this program? Yes. The program is built with that population in mind because that’s who the bone-density research centred on and where the benefit is clearest, but any intermediate lifter chasing heavy compound strength plus bone loading can run it.
Do the rests and weight jumps really change with age? Yes. SteelRep adjusts rest periods and the size of your weight jumps based on your age, so the program keeps demanding heavy work without ignoring the recovery reality of training later in life.
